We caught up with Man of the Match Jordan Johnson following Winsford’s mid-week victory over Maine Road.
‘I thought we started the game really well and then when we went down to 10 men before halftime everyone knew we had to dig in to get a result. It was a fantastic team performance and we never looked like losing, it was just what we needed after Saturday and hopefully we can repeat the good performance and get another 3 points this Saturday. Personally it was brilliant to get my first start of the season and to grab a goal and an assist. It was just what I needed and hopefully there will be many more to come.’
Manager Lee Duckworth also provided his thoughts on the game:
‘Maine Road are always a tricky opposition. They pressure you with energy and pace because they are always a good young side. We made a few changes and the lads that came in hit the ground running. We were on top in the early stages before a penalty put them in front. One thing I’ve learnt from this group is they love to come from behind so I was always confident we would get one back. JJ took his goal really well and worked his socks off all night. I felt Sam’s sending off was a little harsh but we had to get on with it. The players dug deep and we managed to get our noses in front with a great finish from Moorsey, he’s been promising to do that for the last few games so I’m sure it’s the first of many. Then JJ sent Elliot through who finished brilliantly to put us in a commanding position. With ten men we had opportunities to extend our lead but were always going to tire and Maine Road moved the ball really well so when they got there second, you could say it was coming. In the end I was made up to hold on and get the 3 points after playing 70% of the game with 10 men.’
The next home game for the blues is this coming Saturday (15th October) against Barnoldswick Town. With further action midweek on Tuesday away to Hanley Town and at home to Barnton on Thursday in the quarter final of the Mid Cheshire FA Senior Cup. Lastly it is fantastic to see so many new faces supporting the lads, please continue to spread the word of non-league football as your support is greatly appreciated.
