Following Winsford’s 3-1 win over Irlam yesterday, we caught up with Manager Lee Duckworth for his analysis of the game.
‘Today was always going to be tough, the pitch was difficult and Irlam know exactly how to play it with a direct style of football. We knew we’d have to weather the storm for the first 20 mins and grow into the game. The first half was poor from both teams, lacking in quality, but I felt Irlam showed more desire than us. They were ahead through a fortunate penalty and they were lucky to have 11 men still on the pitch after a wayward elbow caught Middy and bust his nose. At half time this forced us into a change and we reminded the players that they needed to at least match Irlam’s work rate before our quality would show through.
We were much better second half, with regards to work rate and desire, which meant we took control of the game and once we got on level terms I felt we would push on and cause further problems. Fortunately this was the case and the lads got the three points their second half endeavours deserved. Every member of the match squad played their part. Many of the lads commented after the game how great it was to see so many Winsford fans there and they were truly the 12th Man at times, we appreciate the continued support.’ – Lee Duckworth
Congratulations to Man of The Match Dale Jennings , as voted for by the opponents:
‘I thought the lads showed great spirit to come from behind and I felt we dominated the game. The work rate and the togetherness of the lads carried us through it was only a matter of time in a scruffy game before we finished our chances. Hopefully we carry on our run and push on up the table.
Full match report to follow.
The next game for the blues is this Saturday 28th January AWAY to Squires Gate.
