Intro –  The Blues arrived in Blackpool to find the weather wet and windy. With Damian Skolorzynski unavailable Michael Thomas dropped into the right back position with Manager Lee Duckworth starting at the centre of defence. Robbie Hatton made the starting line-up at the expense of top scorer Callum Gardner.

First Half –

Winsford did everything but score as early as the first minute when Scott Taylor’s corner was cleared only as far as Lee Duckworth, but the shot was indecisive allowing Andrew Richards to head the ball clear off the line.

The visitors were having much the best of the early minutes and the next chance fell to Will Foster who got on the end of Duckworth’s free kick, but his header was just off target. Piling on the pressure, Robbie Hatton broke clear but although Mike Koral got on the end of his cross pressure from a defender saw his effort drift inches wide of the post. James Rothwell was the next to get on the end of a cross but once again the necessary accuracy was lacking.

GOAL!! The experienced home defence finally cracked on sixteen minutes thanks to a fine surging run from his own half by Nathan Cotterell, a perfectly weighted through ball, and a superb finish from a narrow angle by Koral.

Winsford were still very much on the ascendency and another goal looked likely with fine work by Man-of-the-Match Taylor being the main source of the chances.

GOAL!! The equaliser came very much against the run of play on 35 minutes and in controversial fashion. A high ball over the visitor’s defence looked to have found two Squires Gate players at least a couple of yards offside but the flag stayed down but there was nothing controversial about Gary Pett’s finish. Spotting Matthew Green off his line he launched the ball over him from fully forty yards making Winsford regret their wasted chances.

A further effort from Koral failed to test goalkeeper Ben Fletcher and the hosts were probably thankful to being going into the break on level terms.

Second Half –

There was a great chance for Winsford to regain the lead on 50 minutes when Cotterell carved his way through the defence and laid the ball off for Hatton but the 18-year-old’s first time blast whistled past the angle of the bar and post.

GOAL!! When the visitors were given a 57th minute free kick far out on the left Taylor’s delivery was perfectly placed to cause panic in the Gate defence and Will Foster was the first to react, poking the ball inside the left post.

The Home side hit back and one minute later it took a fine interception by Duckworth to deny Pett a second goal. The next period of the game should have seen Winsford home and dry but Taylor’s volley from a narrow angle glanced off the bar and on 62 minutes there was another moment of controversy when Koral connected with Cotterell’s cross and although the ball seemed well over the line when Fletcher pulled the ball back the Referee standing outside the area in a direct line with the penalty spot waved play on.

GOAL!! A second equaliser came on 73 minutes when Mike Thomas’s clearance struck an opposing player and the ball unluckily rebounded to Pett who drove the ball past Green and into the bottom left corner of the net. The closing minutes saw the home side seemingly happy to hang on for the point. Certainly, the visitors had not given up the hunt for three points with Cotterell’s 75th minute cross somehow missing everyone and Duckworth’s free kick being deflected onto the bar and upright before being scrambled clear.

The hosts had a great chance of bagging all the points on 86 minutes when a cross from the right found Pett unmarked in front of goal but with the net at his mercy his header was wide of the target. It was just as well as it would have been a great injustice if Winsford had returned to Mid-Cheshire pointless.

Verdict – If Winsford had put away half the chances that were presented to them this would have been a comfortable victory. However, things are heading in the right direction and if we take this form to the St Luke’s Barton Stadium on Boxing Day we are going to present many problems for 1874 Northwich.
