Blues travelled to rural Staffordshire and the delightful Hillsfield Stadium of Rocester from the Midland Football Alliance Premier Division for their fourth pre-season friendly.
With the temperature bordering on the nineties this was a test of endurance as well as football skills but both teams gave 100% effort which made an entertaining game for the supporters.
New signing Nathan Cotterell was leading the line with Liam Baker and Dave Davies filling the central defence positions.
Cotterell made his presence felt in the opening stages, creating openings with skill and strength on the ball and it was only some stern defensive work by the Romans than denied him a first half hat trick. Liam Collins was also impressing on the left flank and the visitors looked to be well in control early doors.
Liam Baker’s looping header tested Richard Froggatt in the home goal and at the other end a point-blank block by Dave Davies denied Chris Martin when a goal looked certain.
GOAL!! It was good work by Cotterell on 29 minutes that made room for Collins to cross the ball to the far side of the box where manager Lee Duckworth was on hand to smash the ball into the top left corner of the net.
Both side continued to create chances but they went in for a welcome break honours even.
As the second period progressed tired legs reduced the openings but Rocester should have equalised when a scramble in the box saw the ball fall to Callum Riddell but with an open goal staring him in the face he put the ball over the bar. Straight from the restart the ball went to the other end and this time it was Steve Warburton who wasted a golden opportunity when he smashed the ball wide of the target.
GOAL!! With full time approaching Collins once again proved to be the creator when good work out on the left saw him square the ball to Jonathan Jones on the edge of the box and after taking a second to control the ball he drove it high into the top right corner of the net.
With three tough friendlies to go the manager will now be sorting out his line-up for the vital FA Cup match on August 6th. It won’t be an easy task with so many players vying for a place in the squad.
