‘We started the game quickly but despite knocking on the door we couldn’t get the break through, which was a combination of some good defending from Atherton and some wayward finishing from us. This gave Atherton encouragement and they are a big strong physical team who like to mix it, so the last part of the half began to develop into a battle.
At half time we reminded the players of the qualities that we were looking for and asked them to be braver in the opposition’s box when the chances presented themselves. We finally found a way through with Kyle’s first goal which then meant Atherton had to come out more enabling us to expose spaces between the lines and create more clear cut chances. We hit the woodwork a couple of times, then Jonah scored a debut goal before Kyle completed his hatrick which should give him a lot of confidence as his finishing was superb.
On the day there were some excellent performances, I thought Harry showed us the energy we have been missing, having Jonah’s quality back involved was great too, Terry Cain completed a very good debut and Dale added a spark of guile we have been lacking at times. We now have to establish a level of consistency which will enable us to progress up the league table, starting on Tuesday with a tough away trip to Congleton.’
